Assistant Principal

POSITION TITLE: Assistant Principal

F.L.S.A.: Exempt, Administrative

QUALIFICATIONS: A minimum of two years of successful teaching experience. Master's degree or higher in Educational Leadership and valid Missouri certification. Effective communication skills. Effective team-building and organizational skills.

REPORTS TO: Building Principal

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Teacher contract length plus 10 days, benefits according to Board policies.

JOB GOAL: The assistant principal is responsible for helping the building principal provide effective instructional leadership for the school's operation. Major responsibilities may include student discipline, attendance, the educational program, and developing effective community relations.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Assists the building principal in the development, implementation and communication of educational goals.
  • Helps provide strong and positive educational leadership in organizing, developing and administering the instructional program of the assigned school.
  • Assists in the utilization of data and test scores to identify areas of strength and weakness and can communicate this information to staff for curriculum goal setting.
  • Assists the building principal in developing the necessary climate for change and growth within the school.
  • Supervises teaching staff and programs in accordance with building and district philosophy.
  • Assists in selection, assignment, orientation and evaluation of all personnel for whom she/he has supervisory responsibility.
  • Provides for effective and efficient day-to-day operation of school facilities that are conducive to a positive learning environment.
  • Serves as building administrator in the absence of secondary administrator.
  • Supervises students.
  • Supervises student activities and events.
  • Assists building principal in the supervision of all professional, administrative, and support personnel attached to the school.
  • Maintains high standards of student conduct and enforces discipline as necessary, according to due process rights of students.
  • Demonstrates effective organizational skills and completes duties promptly and accurately.
  • Establishes and maintains programs to monitor and improve student attendance.
  • Helps establish and maintain effective discipline in the school and promotes a positive school climate.
  • Consistent and regular attendance is an essential function of this position.


OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Assists with the process of developing building goals that are congruent with the district strategic plan (CSIP).
  • Reviews lesson plans and confers with teachers to link teaching/learning activities with educational goals as directed by the building principal.
  • Develops and demonstrates effective communications through participation in regular staff meetings and personal contacts.
  • Develops and follows a plan of self-improvement which promotes both personal and organizational goals.
  • Assists in the supervision of a comprehensive co-curricular and extra-curricular program that supports the development of students.
  • Cooperates with, assists, and supports other administrators in the analysis and solution of their administrative problems when appropriate.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and appropriate judgment in behavior, speech, dress, and appropriate professional manner for the work setting.
  • Demonstrates effective human relations and communication skills.
  • Adheres to good safety practices.
  • Adheres to all district rules, regulations, and policies.
  • All other duties as required or assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: An individual who holds this position must frequently move in and around buildings and grounds to visit classrooms, attend meetings and supervise bus loading and unloading areas and sit for an hour or more at a time. An individual who holds this position must have the ability to speak and hear in an environment where numerous conversations and activities may be taking place simultaneously. The position requires a moderate amount of travel.

CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT: The work environment is consistent with a typical office environment; however the individual who holds this position will occasionally be required to be outside in temperatures below freezing and above 100 degrees. The individual who holds this position is frequently required to work irregular or extended hours.
