Deaf Interpreter

POSITION TITLE: Deaf Interpreter

F.L.S.A.: Non-Exempt

QUALIFICATIONS: Must be licensed to practice in the State of Missouri. Must hold or be eligible for a Certificate to Practice in the State of Missouri. Minimum qualifications for certification are MICS Intermediate level or RCED. Must have an Associate's Degree or equivalent in Sign Language from and approved and accredited Sign Language program.

REPORTS TO: Building Principal or Director of Special Services

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Student attendance days and benefits according to Board policy.

JOB GOAL: By using sign language, the interpreter will assist the teacher and the student who is deaf or hearing impaired for purposes of providing access to the general curriculum, classroom dynamics and social interaction. The interpreter assists teachers in the classroom with support of instruction, activities and student management.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • By using sign language, the interpreter facilitates communication between students who are deaf or hearing impaired and teachers and students in general education classroom and school settings.
  • Provides signing interpretation for parent and/or teacher conferences, IEP meetings, peer interactions, emergency drills, field trips and during school assemblies.
  • Participates as a member of the IEP team; reports student related concerns to the appropriate educational personnel; works collaboratively with the student's educational team.
  • Interpreter must adhere to the rules of confidentiality required of all school personnel.
  • Consistent and regular attendance is an essential function of this position.
  • Maintain and increase skills by attending workshops and reading current literature.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this position and employee is regularly required to sit, talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to walk and use fingers. The employee is occasionally required to stand, reach and bend and lift and carry.

CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT: The individual who holds this position will regularly work in a school environment that is noisy and active. Occasionally the individual will be required to work outdoors for short periods of time to perform such tasks as loading or unloading students from district transportation and supervising recess or other activities.
