POSITION TITLE: General Maintenance

F.L.S.A. STATUS: Non-Exempt

QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education, training and experience equivalent to the completion of a high school diploma. Prior experience operating and maintaining diesel, gasoline and electrically powered motors and machinery and their attachments. Ability to read sufficiently well to understand labels, instructions and directions as they pertain to work performance, safety and record keeping aspects of the job. Possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities and physical attributes necessary to perform the essential functions of the position. Such alternatives to the above as the Board may find appropriate or acceptable.

REPORTS TO: Maintenance Director

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve month position, 8 hours per day. Salary and benefits as determined by Board policies, using the Support Staff schedule.

JOB GOAL: To maintain the physical plant and grounds in a condition of operating excellence so that full educational use of them may be made at all times. To make the facility safe and secure for all who enter.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Perform various maintenance tasks such as minor electrical, plumbing and facility repairs.
  • Perform general labor inside and outside the physical plant including handling materials and supplies, moving equipment and operating power-driven equipment.
  • Operate and maintain diesel, gasoline and electrically powered motors and machinery and their attached implements or equipment. Attached implements include mowing machines, forklifts, hole augers, spreaders, seeders and sprayers. Also operate and maintain cutting-grinding tools and air wrenches.
  • Maintains and cares for facilities in accordance with state and local safety and code requirements and Board of Education policies and administrative procedures. Assembles and installs equipment and fixtures including playground equipment, mow lawns with hand, power or riding mower. Prunes, trims and fertilizes as needed. Collects and properly disposes of refuse.
  • Works with and finishes cement, mortar and asphalt materials in the process of constructing and maintaining walk-ways, drive-ways and parking areas.
  • Moves items for the district such as tools, equipment, appliances, machinery, furniture, fixtures and a variety of educational and instructional materials.
  • Be responsible for timely completion of work orders.
  • Consistent and regular attendance is an essential function of this position.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Demonstrate the proper use and care of hand tools (i.e. hammers, saws, chisels and wrenches), and equipment (i.e. power saws, drills, rivet guns, etc.).
  • Work overtime as directed.
  • Attend meetings as directed.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and appropriate judgment in behavior, speech, dress and appropriate professional manner for the work setting.
  • Adheres to good safety practices.
  • Adheres to all district rules, regulations and policies.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.
  • Assists with custodial evaluations.
  • Assists with ordering supplies.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Regularly walking, hearing and speaking; being able to communicate in noisy environments such as construction sites; have close, moderate and distance vision ability; must be able to travel between district facilities. To lift, turn, bend, twist and carry a minimum of 60 pounds repeatedly. Must be able to work overhead, as well as on a ladder. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp and use tools and climb ladders or other equipment. The employee will occasionally lift or move up to 90 pounds.

CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT: Employee will be required to regularly work inside and outside, which may involve inclement weather including rain, snow and temperatures below freezing or in excess of 100 degrees. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee may work with toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level could be occasionally loud.
