Guidance Counselor

POSITION TITLE: Guidance Counselor

F.L.S.A.: Exempt

QUALIFICATIONS: Valid Missouri Certification. Degree required meeting requirements for guidance counselor. Teaching experience preferred. School counseling experience preferred. Demonstrated success in mediation and relationship building. Knowledge of Missouri's Comprehensive Guidance Program.

REPORTS TO: Principal

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Teacher contract days plus 15 days as determined by the Board of Education with benefits according to Board policy.

JOB GOAL: To offer the student counseling and comprehensive, developmental guidance services in the areas of personal/social, educational/academic, and career/vocational growth and development which will enable him/her to live successfully and become a contributing member of society.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Implement the guidance curriculum.
  • Guide and counsel groups and individual students through the development of educational and career plans.
  • Counsel small groups and individual students with problems.
  • Consult with teachers, staff and parents regarding the developmental needs of students.
  • Refer students with severe problems to appropriate community resources in consultation with their parents.
  • Be a participating member of building evaluation, Section 504, and student support teams.
  • Support the overall district's educational program through general consultation activities and committee work.
  • Assist with the placement of students in appropriate career and educational settings.
  • Consistent and regular attendance is an essential function of this position.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Attend all meetings and training sessions as directed.
  • Coordinate and facilitate state testing.
  • Assist administrators with the distribution and interpretation of standardized test scores for students and parents.
  • Assist administration in coordinating counseling in crisis situations.
  • Facilitate informational sessions for parents regarding financial aid and college admissions.
  • Attend/participate in IEP and Section 504 meetings as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates professionalism and appropriate judgment in behavior, speech, dress, and appropriate professional manner for the work setting.
  • Demonstrates effective human relations and communication skills.
  • Adheres to good safety practices.
  • Understands and adheres to all district rules, regulations, and policies.
  • All other duties as required or assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: An individual who holds this position must have the ability to speak and hear in an environment where numerous conversations and activities may be taking place simultaneously. They must be able to move around the classroom and read handwritten or printed materials.

CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT: The individual who holds this position will regularly work in a school environment that is noisy and active. Occasionally the individual will be required to work outdoors for short periods of time to perform such tasks as loading or unloading students from district transportation and supervising recess or other activities.
