POSITION TITLE: Head Custodian/Custodian

F.L.S.A.: Non-exempt

QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or GED. The ability to perform the essential job functions, to take direction, maintain positive relationships and exhibit good grooming and dress.

REPORTS TO: Maintenance Director

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Full time, twelve months, 8 hours/day, with benefits according to Board policy. Part-time positions are prorated based on need.

JOB GOAL: The custodial staff is responsible for maintaining a clean, sanitized, and attractive learning environment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Interpret instructions in written documentation or given orally such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedural manuals in English.
  • Perform major cleaning tasks such as, but not limited, to vacuuming, wet-mopping, sweeping, dusting, emptying trash, recycle material, and pencil sharpeners, cleaning chalkboards or white boards, and disinfecting drinking fountains and surfaces.
  • Clean all indoor facilities including floors, walls, windows and surfaces in all rooms and hallways.
  • Clean restrooms, including floors and all fixtures (i.e. urinals, toilets, sinks, mirrors, partitions, and counters) ensure restrooms are hygienic.
  • Restock disposable items such as soap, paper towels, etc.
  • Use cleaning materials and techniques as directed.
  • Perform ongoing tasks such as replacing light bulbs, filling dispensers, and setting up facilities for student and adult use.
  • Make minor building repairs and promptly report major repairs needed to the building administrator.
  • Ensure that all doors and windows are appropriately locked.
  • Assist in major clean-up in summer, such as washing desks and chairs, washing down walls, stripping and waxing floors, and shampooing carpets.
  • Consistent and regular attendance is an essential function of this position.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Keep grounds free of rubbish and in winter shovel snow from steps and sidewalks and apply ice melt when appropriate.
  • Prepare requests for custodial supplies and equipment for building operations.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment.
  • Must have the ability to write legibly and complete requested paperwork or reports on time.
  • Assist in preparation of work order request for building repairs and maintenance.
  • Respond to requests from staff members.
  • Must maintain a positive demeanor, and use appropriate language while maintaining a professional relationship with students, faculty, administration, parents, and patrons.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and appropriate judgment in behavior, speech, and dress in the work setting.
  • Attend meetings as scheduled by supervisors and administrators.
  • Adheres to good safety practices.
  • Adheres to all district rules, regulations, and policies.
  • All other duties as required or assigned.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing job functions employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools or controls and talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to reach, climb, bend, squat, stoop and kneel. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp and use tools and climb ladders. The employee will use a twenty pound vacuum daily for three to four hours, push or pull items such as desks, tables, bleachers and scrubbing machines. The employee must frequently lift or move up to fifty pounds. Occasionally the employee will lift or move up to ninety pounds. Specific vision requirements include close and peripheral vision and depth perception.

CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job the employee regularly works indoors and occasionally works outdoors in extreme temperatures of below freezing and above 100 degrees. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee may occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level is usually moderate but can occasionally be loud.
