In the West Platte School District, beginning teachers are assigned to a mentor teacher for two years. During the first year, the beginning teacher may meet several times a month with their mentor to work on teaching strategies, curriculum, assessment, classroom management practices, and other areas of interest or need. In addition to the mentor, district administrators and peers also work with the new teachers to help them hone their skills. District administrators regularly spend time observing in the new teacher's classroom in order to provide non-evaluative feedback for improvement and success in teaching. First and second year teachers are also provided systematic professional development in the areas of classroom management, classroom engagement, instruction, technology, curriculum, and assessment competencies. During the second year of the program, beginning teachers continue to meet with their mentor, though generally less frequently, and participate in district-wide professional development while receiving on-going support from district administration and fellow colleagues.
